Kaltwasserkorallen

Cold water corals

She never gets to know her close relatives from the light-flooded shallows of tropical seas. Her favourite environment is characterized by freezing waters and strong tidal currents which bring oceanic plankton into the tentacles of the stone coral Lophelia. Well adapted to a life without sunlight at great depths, the pearly white organism has only been discovered recently and is considered endangered by an extensive use of deep sea trawls which destroy whole reefs within seconds - a devastating damage to those living structures which only grow a few millimetres in a year.

During an expedition in 2013, scientists from the GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel and the cold water aquarium OZEANEUM continued their investigation of those coral reefs by means of manned submersibles and sophisticated diving equipment and techniques.
